How are 2000's bad? Back you're opinions up with some fact.....
I have a 2000 180hp quattro coupe, the instrument cluster needed to be replaced, and thats the only problem with the car that wasn't caused by the previous owners neglect/ignorance.
All Mk I TT's should have their timing belt replaced long before Audi suggests it, 60K miles seems to be the point where it becomes a gamble, other than that, you shouldn't expect anything out of the usual.

I also have an 00 model, but mine is the fwd 180. the previous owner replaced my guage cluster, but that's not a 2000 specific issue, thats more of a general TT issue. I also had a cel caused by a vacuum leak, but that's just a hose getting old and worn out. My car has almost 90k miles on it too, and that's really all that's happened. I do have a slight 2nd gear grind when slamming gears, but some redline MT90 tranny fluid helped a lot there, and it almost never happens anymore. I also hear that is specific to the FWD 5 speed tranny, and the quattros weren't really affected regardless of year.
IMO, you'll be just fine with it, especially with only 55,000 kilometers.
