So, turning off the fan for ignition solving the problem is a coincidence?

RE: Terrible squealing
I just bought my 2001 TT 180 Roadster Saturday. I have the same problem in the mornings when its cold. After driving for a bit the sound goes away when starting. Also if I leave it sitting in the sun it doesn't squeel either. It doesn't seem like this is a huge problem and I dont think I should be worried. Has anyone had any luck with getting this fixed by a dealer or mechanic?

RE: Terrible squealing
If any one has found a resolution to this problem I have it to just on start up when cold sounds like a squealing belt for a second or two if I hit the gas it goes away . I just put a new cylinder head water pump and all new belts on the car 2000 a4 1.8Q . The small V belt from the water pump to the powerstering pump had slack on it I just cut it off and went to VW dealer for new belt might have been wrong belt but I'm still getting squealing on start up .I think its possibly the clutch fan or tensioner and the power stering pump was a couple oz.low on fluid .ssssssssooooooo aaaaaaaaaaaaa IIIIIIIII don't know.

The mechanic has now replaced the belt and belt tensioner, the secondary pump, and the blower motor. Strike 3, you're out. It turned out to be the electric fan in front od the radiator making the noise. Lot's of free work from these guys, at least. I have all sorts of new parts that are meaningless in a car with 30k miles.
