TB scratch - TB KILLER REVEALED!
This is a new thread in reguards of the previous timebelt scratch, engine seize? thread.
So after opening her up, a bit was found lodged into the block case and crank pulley from trying to start the engine while the bit was inside the covers.
This sucker will not come out no matter which way i turn the crank pulley.
thing is, I have to replace the belt, so i have to align the TDC. and this thing wont let it happen. Need to figure out how to getit out of there before i can replace my TB. also i found my crank pulley teeth have been damged so now i have to replace that too
i have to break the bit i guess, without breaking the timebelt some how. and replace the pulley...
I'm not sure if i can do a crank pulley change, any advice??

Have you tried a flathead or chisel with a hammer to turn the bit till it rotates out? I hate to sound cheap or lazy, but the looks like there is enough meat on those gears to keep the belt in place, however it would be expensive if it failed.

Its hard to see but it actually blew a tiny hole in the bottom part of the block, its wedged inside the little oil pan crevice and the gear. if i go clock wise it gets stuck and strips the gear if i keep turning, counter clockwise it gets wedged completely and i can turn it, ill figure something out. no matter what, the bit has no play what so ever
I thought the same thing about leaving the gear, but the metal stripped kinda upward, i dont want my timebelt to get any extra stress no matter how minor.
the gears are only $25, but im clueless on removing or installing them. i know theres a tool to hold them in place to remove the crank bolt but its $50 and thats yet another pinch. plus there might be a chance you have to go all the way into the block.
If i have to go into the block, fug it, ill leave the gear and file the teeth down. wish there was someone to explain how to get that gear off

I found on VWVORTEX
passat forum discussed it a little bit. I guess its not too difficult, just put the car in gear so the crank locks up and throw the 19mom wit a breaker bar and try to loosen it up.
Now i gotta figure out how to keep the timing exact. the gear doesnt have any guides so i need to line the teeth up exactly as before, and hope leaving it in gear doesnt let the crank turn, not even a slightly. luckily ecs has them for 12 bucks and a website called hansauto has them for $7

haha right?! the noise the engine made when trying to start it sounded like i dropped a nut in the head, thank goodness i didn't. my vc gasket changed turned into a tb change, at least i can relax now about engine issues. she was clean inside and now shes well maintained.
now im worrying about the turbo haha... 106k wonder if i should do a rebuild for safety measures...

Problems have just begun... I lined my cam up and found that my crank is in the 7o'clock position, it jumped more than half the teeth...
bent valves are a obvious, but what else could there be, it could be bad because the belt is actually still attatched. am i going to have to replace springs? pistons? will I even know until i open it?
