Default Soon to be TT owner. Need some help.

Hey guys, not sure what I should do.

2001 TT, 225, 6 speed. 51K miles. Car had outrageous sticker on it for $17.5K. I talked the guy down to $14.7. I am also getting a GE warranty for 2 years/24K for $2300(or 2700?) extra. That covers engine, and power train and other things.

Car was running a little hot, and pulled to the right. There was some other things like radio not working right and kick pannels worn. There was also a little backfire "put..put, put" very low, every now and then... He said he will take care of all these things before I sign for it on Monday. I told him to throw in the 60K mile service too, he agreed.

So... how did I do, good deal? Fair at least? I talked the guy down a lot, but I hate this process. It's more of the fact of being taken advantage of than the money.

TIA!

If it running a little hot, its probably the water pump breaking and that and the timing belt needs replaced. I would make sure they take car of all of that before buying it. If not, you will be out ~$1k for the job and ~$4k if it ruins the engine shortly after. Just make sure its in perfect running order before going nuts with it

Thanks for the reply, I will certainly make sure these things are in order as best I can. Couldn't this also simply be fan/thermostat/ fluid? The car will have the 3 month lemon law, and have warranty from GE.

Are water pumps and timing belts scheduled to crap out at around 50-60K miles?

Thanks,

It could be a simple thermostat or coolent temp sensor. But i would make sure to have those changed first. The TB is scheduled to be changed at 100k but they need to be done by 75k. Some have even broke (either bad tensioner or waterpump) as early as 50k. If you search, there are many people that have them break around 75k.

i just bought the same car you did 2 weeks ago for 13700 in excellent condition with all the extras and it included the 2 year warranty. Mine had 17000 more miles on it than yours but mine is so far in perfect condition. I would definitely listen to Cincy. just something to compare against i guess. My TT was originally priced at 16000.

I will certainly listen! BTW, that is a great deal. If your warranty is through GE, the car itself must have been around 11K. I see 180's online with more than 89K miles on it for around 10-11.

So, what do you guys think? If all is in worker order by this Friday, or Monday, should I pick this up? There were only a few TT's in my area and almost all hard tops 225 are gone already.

Thanks,

If it runs fine, dont see why not. Just be prepared like all cars to spend money on maintence that may arise. You should know of the common issues by reading the first couple pages of the forum.

It's a good deal, but like all tt's.... its going to be a money pit.

Skip the aftermarket warranty. No where accepts mine, and if they do, its re-inbersment only. Also- 60k mile service is nearly $2k from the dealer... no way in h3ll he is going to toss that in for free. Your going to get an oil change and quick check over.
