Default so my timing belt failed...a question about engine codes

I have taken lots of information from this forum in the past while working with MY TT 225 Roadster..Thanks. A few days ago my timing belt failed (missing teeth) while i was driving. I knew immediately that this probably meant that I would have valve damage. I had the car towed home and set to work. My first effort was to replace the timing belt (get the engine back in time) and test each cylinder with a compression tester. i easily replaced the timing belt today (what a piece of crap) and tried to test for compression. Guess what...nothing...nada...from number 1. So now I am going to rip apart the head cover and have a look from the top before I completely remove the head.

so a couple of questions for those skilled in this area:

1.) I have a 2001 TT Roadster Quattro 225 6MT...is my cylinder head specific to my model or is the head common among other 1.8 models? How can I use the engine code/ Head # to determine what i may need to get?

2.) Is there a good place to get a replacement head used or new or aftermarket or is it best to search locally?

I appreciate any help you can give me at this point.

Thanks,

MB

not the same as the standard 1.8t head because yours is 225BHP and the others are 180BHP, you only need the VIN number when ordering parts and im sure it will be cheaper to rebuild if you have the right tools

Lehighwiz,
Out of curiousity, how many miles were on the car when the timing belt went?

How can I use the engine code/ Head # to determine what i may need to get? - You can use any 1.8t head buta transverse non vvt car will be a strait bolt on (2000 TT ATC or 2000 jetta/golf/gti AWD).

2.) Is there a good place to get a replacement head used or new or aftermarket or is it best to search locally? - ebay or a local junk yard will be the best but you may not need a whole new head. You probably need some new valves and getting the pistons smoothed out (valves hitting them).

Thanks for the quick responses. I do have a technical question: How do I confirm that the crankshaft is set to full TDC once the engine has gone out of time? The head is easy to set with the markings, but i cannot see any good markings on the crankgear.

Thanks,

MB

You might want to pull the plugs and see the top of the pistons for damage. If you have 0 compression in cyl 1,avalve or twoare probably gone.

yeah, i figured that too, and i did try to inspect the piston, but i couldn't get a good look i began to question my timing of the crankshaft though. are there marks there that i can use to validate the position of the crank?

here is a pic of my timing belt if anyone is interested. One thing i can say is that in the days leading up to the break, i actually did hear a noise from the engine that sounded like a serpentine belt problem but very faint. I wish that now i would have payed more attention to the noise.
