Thats because you like to **** money away since your not making any more power up there and just wasting gas, but you know that already
LOL! I like to be pretty conscious of my gas so I shift around 4.5 or 5.5 usually. I rarely go up to redline, maybe when I'm showing off leaving a toll plaze or something. Plus watching your miles til empty display drastically drop as you redline it every gear shift isn't too cool.

On the street I shift between 4000-4500 or like Cincy said the peak HP is around 5500. I can usually manage about 25 Hwy / 20 City driving like that.

At the track it's a whole other thing... shifting at 5500-6000... running near redline... brake hard, down shift... 5.5 MPG on $7.50/gallon 100 octane. Expensive, but an absolute blast.

I regularly run on the track for short distances 500-750 meters at or near redline, more than 10K track miles on the stock engine/turbo and she is still running strong.

I shift at 6k...
I consider redline to be 6500 even though the limiter is slightly after that.

And yes, I don't drive enough lately to care about gas prices.
Neither do you .

Ditto what XCLR8TT said. High revs for normal driving aren't going to outright break the engine, but thats still a lot of stresses you're putting on bearings and whatnot. I tone it down a bit for normal street driving, still open it up good when im getting on the highway, or on some winding back road. Gotta blow the carbon out of the engine once in a while.... ; )

you people are crazy!

in today's day and age where petroleum costs are reaching an all-time high, california's gasoline prices are peaking $4.00 a gallon, you can hardly find me shifting past 3k rpm!

seriously

I figure accelerate quickly so i can get the car in 6th as soon as possible and let the revs drop. I'm saving gas....

Meh! I figure I am making nearly twice what I was making when gas was less than $2.00 so no real change in my lifestyle.
