RE: is this the right turbo for my 180t fwd
That looks like the turbo off the longitudinal 1.8T. The transverse motors use a unit with a longer neck off the compressor outletside.
All TT's are transverse as they dont utilize the traditional quattro system.
for a 180TT your looking for a K03S for OEM replacement, or a K04-001 as a cheap (~$100 more) factory upgrade. The 001 is good for 20-30hp and 30-50ft-lbs more then the K03S and puts out less heat. Spool is almost identicle to OEM and it will hold boost to redline, unlike the K03.
For the 225TT you want a K04-20. this will also fit a 180 but you need an assortment of 225/custom parts to make it work.
Then theres always the option to bolt on an aftermarket exhaust manifold and get whatever turbo you please. This is the most expensive and knowledge intensive route, obviously.

If you JUST upgrade the turbo the physical boost pressure will stay the same. A k04 flows more CFM at 10PSI (as an example) then a k03 does, and so it makes more power and less heat (not having to spin as fast). If you upgrade the turbo AND increase boost (or go to a much larger turbo), then youre talking additional modifactions (a DV only being the tip of the iceberg depending on how much more boost you want).
The 001 is only slightly larger then the K03S so the gains arent huge, but they will be noticeable. The 20 is bigger, but requires some supporting mods. Both of these options maintain OEM quality and retain daily driveability. After that you are getting into aftermarket range, but the sky(or youre wallet)is the limit here andthe risks are greater as far as reliability is concerned.

I found that one in the link for 350 bucks the k04-001 is like 850. I would love the upgrade but im also considering i have 91k on the motor and i am not sure i want to start increasing power until i have a fresh bottom end and head built. i am trying to look at a replacement for one that may be going out. ... thanks for all you input but do you think this one may fit?

No, its for a longitudinal motor.
you need the K03 or K03S madefor the transverse motor. The Compressor outlet is longer and shaped like a gooseneck.
$350 for a '100% brand new' K03 is a pretty shady price. They are over $1000 from Audi, and $600-700 is usually the best 'deal' you'll find. Which is why a K04-001 is usually a better option for when the stock turbo goes bad. It wont be nearly enough abuse to punish your high mileage motor, roughly the same power increase as a chip tune.
But hey mang, whatever you wanna do.
