Potential 2001 1.8 coupe purchase
I have a good friend who is selling her 2001 180 coupe fwd with 21,000 miles. She is the original owner. She wants $14.5K for it. I have driven it many times, it has alway's been garaged. Maintenance records indicate a propensity for the windows to go up and down on their own and the brake lights staying on. I know she hardly ever got it over 5k rpm, possibly quite a few short trips (not so good?), rarely boosting it up. How do they work in snow w/good hakkas or equivlaent?
I have owned many audis but never one older that 1993. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Fair price. Great mileage.
Sounds like you're familiar with the car, and know you would like it.
Post Pics so we can see it.
Then Buy it.
Then Post MorePics.
Here is my usual buy a 225 if you can find one because they sellin about the same price range speech. That was it... short speech.

I have a fwd and it still handles great in the snow with some Kuhmo ASX tires. The windows happen because they just need reset (easy fix) and the price and miles seem good. As for the brake lights, that would require some searching in the lines. It should be some wires the are touching and could be fixed with some elictrical tape (like my cd changer needed).

Thanks for the info. These seem like like minor issues for an Audi. I am a little concerned about all of the short trips but that is a minor concern. The car does look like it just rolled off the showroom floor. It looks like I have a new car in my future.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

I have the same car. It's great in the snow. I had standard tires on mine when I took a trip to WV to do some snowboarding. It snowed like crazy and it drove better than the big SUV's that I saw sliding all over the place. The price is decent. The wholesale book on it is around $10K plus adds. If you know the car, that makes a difference.Get it, you'll be happy.

RE: Potential 2001 1.8 coupe purchase timing belt
I spoke to my local audi mechanic John Beckius (he writes an article in the quattro quarterly, I think) and he recomends replacing the timing belt every 4 years as they can become brittle. Is this necessary? I did not budget for this.

I've never heard that one before.
Usually, it's the belt tensioner and plastic impeller on the water pump that go before the recommended service interval from audi (which is 120K miles).
This usually happens around 60K miles. Which is why it's highly advised that TT owners get this service done every 60K miles.
Considering it's an 01, I can see what he's thinking. Honestly, take a look at the belt and see if it's brittle. I doubt it will be, as you said the car was garaged and babied.
My car is a 2000 and I didn't get my timing belt, water pump and tensioner changed until this year when I hit 59K.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Edit: Oh yeah! I knew I forgot something! The timing belt itself is not normally the culprit. TT owners (from what I've read and experienced) have not had problems with the belt itself.
As the belt can actually last to the recommended 120K miles.
