P1128 Code

P1128 Code
I know there has been numerous discussions on this code, but I would like some suggestions.
I have a 2001 Audi TT Quattro 105,000 miles.
Driving the car back on a 700 mile trip the check engine light came on. The car was running fine. Mileage was around 29MPG. Only thing I noticed was a smell of what seemed like old gas. Got home and checked the code and it was P1128. I reset the code and cleaned the MAF using MAF cleaner. The car started and idled fine, but when I started driving it would get to 3000 RPM and start stumbling and spitting and sputtering. After about 4000RPM it would clear up. Did this for about 25 miles and then started running fine. Stayed running and idling fine for about another 25 miles and check engine light came back on. Same code P1128, cleared the code and spitting and sputtering from 3000 to 4000 RPM started back.
Where would you guys recommend starting without just swapping parts. I don't have access to VAG COM
