Default oil weight

i got an 01 audi tt, with 76k miles on it. Ive been putting 5w-30 in it for some time now, but i was un sure if they used 5w40 or not in the past. Is there a big difference in the two oil's and is it to late to switch to 5w-40?

SAE 5W40 is "Preferred" 5W30 is acceptable also. Use only synthetic oils.

you need a 502 approved oil. The only 5w30 i know off the top of my head is valvoline synpower.

syntec 5w40 is good right?

isn't the 502 standard the lowest vw standard there is?

kinda surprises me the TT falls under that. [&:]

yes, syntec is fine. The 502 is the old standerd when the TT was new. There is now a 505 standard. I posted a pdf a couple of times that has all of both listed.

So any oil that meets the 502 or the 505 is good?

they all should be fine for 5k miles or more and prevent sludge from forming and harm to the engine/turbo.

cincy, I am a bit lost now... I could have sworn you said 0-40w was the preferred weight. mobil 1 0-40w is what I used last, about 2000 miles ago, is this ok?

From Bentley Manual
5W40 (preferred) - All Engines: 2000-2006
5W30 - 1.8L and 3.2L
0W40 - 1.8L and 3.2L: 2005-2006
