If you don't know for sure what's wrong with it, don't buy it(unless you don't mind spending a LOT more than you thought). These cars are expesive/pain in the *** to buy parts for. And if the TB is gone, there's a really good chance that's just the beginnig of your headaches.
Yea I know, I already plan on working all the numbers out before I make the final decision. I totally know what your saying on expensive parts and labor ($140 hr). Timing belt kits are like $500 I thought (not counting thousands for labor), so yea. A used engine goes for around $4k. I also considered at worst case scenario I could part it out to get my money back if I can get it in the low threes, if all else fails. I had an Acura NSX 2 years ago and I know all about rediculously priced parts, haha

I would also avoid it. You don't want to by a vw with known problems, these cars are really expensive to fix.

I hear ya, but why do you think it was poorly maintained just because the timing belt broke?

^^^ If the owner did pay to change the tb, I highly doubt the halidex fluid and filter were ever changed along with the "lifetime" trans fluid, ect.

Hows the condition on the rest of the car? Gauges work? Cd player work?

tb kits are cheap like 200 bucks. Install you can buy a bently manual and do it yourself. Make the whole repair alot cheaper.

the car has 85k miles on it, I maintain cars and I doubt I would have at that mileage either.... I honestly do understand what you are saying though. Everything else works on it as far a i know.. I dont mean to speak agaisnt you because you clearly have more experience with TT's than me

I also found out she was driving about 25 miles per hour when it broke. She said the car just died/lost all power at that point with no weird noises...

yup. I would keep looking... this COULD be the only problem and be an easy fix but it could also be a mess of problems.
