I need some advice as I am a converting honda guy. I am looking at an 01 TT 225h coupe with 85k miles in my area that a guy is selling cheap ($4,000) due to a broken timing belt. I was wondering if the motor was non interferance? Also is there a link on what kind of job it is (difficulty) to replace the T-belt? I also saw that there was some kind of refund document going around that Im guessing was due to a recall issue with these belts breaking.. Anyway I appreciate all help and advice... -Zach

When my TB broke. I had to replace some of the valves (cause they got bent, should mention I bought QED Valves), head had to be reworked, also needed to buy the TB kit. So total I spent around 1500 in parts. I called around a few shops and the price they were charging was like 1200 -1600 in labor. So I did it at home. It wasn't hard to do, just a pain due to not having alot of room to work with.

Edited: Here is link to TB DIY http://www.amp82.co.uk/tt/timingbelt/

It is an interferance engine. If the recal inspection was not done, the engine is not covered under the recal.

It's a big job to fix.

i called audi and they told me if the timing belt failed or the tensioner then it may still be fixed under warranty. Now if the waterpump ceased, they said, then it would not be under warranty...

Buy it if you want. It sounds like a good deal. But find out the extent of the damage first. If audi will do it under warranty, it's a good deal. Just know what your getting into.

thanks- and heres what I was thinking feel free to critique the areas I am not thinking about...

Best case scenario- fully covered and I have 3500-4000 invested into it.

1st possible- its not covered and the head needs to be sent off and of course a timing belt kit from audi. have about 7k invested

worst case- a valve damaged a piston and it needs to be rebuilt or have a new engine. have 8-9k invested

granted I dont pay for labor at any case-

thanks for all the replies

Find a way to get audi to give you an estimate before you buy it. Otherwise your buying it without knowing. I'm sure if you talk to your local audi dealer they would be willing to figure out a way to inspect the car before you buy it. If you don't know for sure what's wrong with it, don't buy it(unless you don't mind spending a LOT more than you thought). These cars are expesive/pain in the *** to buy parts for. And if the TB is gone, there's a really good chance that's just the beginnig of your headaches.

Very true. I bet that tt was not maintained very well.

I would also avoid it. You don't want to by a vw with known problems, these cars are really expensive to fix.
