Hello, all! I have just purchased a 2001 Audi TT Roadster. It is the 1.8T 6-speed 225hp model, with a Rawlings interior. She's got just under 93k on the clock. Pretty sweet, I think. I picked it up for a cool $10,000.

The seller, a small dealer in Overland Park, KS, is having the soft top replaced, the power window module replaced and the climate control ***** replaced, as per my request at no additional charge.

He insisted that the timing belt had been replaced on schedule, but no documentation was provided other than a carfax that vaguely suggests a dealer service was performed at that mile marker. I am of course going to tear her open and replace the belt, tensioner, waterpump and thermostat with a kit purchased from ECS Tuning. On a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult would you all say that job is? I'm pretty mechanically adept, and have done timing belts on Hondas/Acuras, but never an Audi.

In your honest opinion, did I get a good deal? You won't hurt my feelings or pride. Excited to be the proud owner of a TT!

How did it go?

I'm mechanically inept and am considering purchasing a 2004 ish. Wondering ownership cost and how hard/easy to DIY stuff like you mentioned.

Welcome to TT-land! My wife has put 185K on her 2001 225 6sp roadster. She also has the very nice "baseball optique" interior (baseball glove stitched). I have replaced the TB myself 3 times. I can do it in about 4-6 hrs. Not too tough. I have also done the job a couple of times on my '91 V8 quattro (3.6L 32V V8) and '03 S8 (4.2L 40V V8)--these are much more challenging but still doable on a weekend.
