Default mobil 1 5w 30

i just did an oil change on my Audi TT. I switched it to 5w 30 mobil 1 fully synthetic.I had 10w 40 in there before that. Ever since i have changed the oil, ive been showing pretty extreme temps on the gauge. I was wondering if 5w 30 is not a good oil weight/viscosity for this car.

PS: I live in Las Vegas

Thanks in advance,

Bryan

both are the wrong oil. You want/need to use the Mobil 0w 40 oil

Audi/VW advises to use the 5w 40 or even 0w 40 but people do run 5w30 and have no issues....maybe its not because of the oil. check your coolant temp sensor and thermostat...also getting a new oil cooler might help as the stock ones tend to go bad....when i get some money around i'll be doing an oil cooler

should i drain the oil and switch immediately? Also it shouldnt be a problem to keep the new filter would it?

You should be fine using it for a few thousand miles. But start using the correct oil from now on.

yeah dont waste the oil. and you wouldnt want to drain the oil without at least removing the oil filter to drain the oil that it holds.

well hold on there, 5w30 isn't terrible. I CANNOT get 0w40 locally, so 5w30 is my second best option, and what i've run in my audi's for 5 years w/o problems.

if you have cooling issues, i'd look elsewhere before i blamed the oil viscosity.

I was in the store the other day and noticed that the castrol syntec 5-40 has now been VW 502 approved. I think I might try it this next oil change instead of the usual mobil 1. 0-40

only because its the factory weight for this car.

I still cannot find what the deal is with my car. I guess i can check at pepboys and have them get the error code? My check engine light came on yesterday. If i unplug the battery, the light will go out until i ride the car for a while longer and it heats back up. At this point, my turbo seems to go into limp mode with little boost.***The car does not give a HOT warning, it simply is running as close to the Hot side of the gauge without passing it. Also putting the shifter into gear seems to be a bit more rough since this problem has occured.

I am very mechanically inclined, but this is my first audi and i picked it up about 3 months ago and only service i had to do so far (other than oil) is changing the window motor on driver side.

I have worked on superbikes for about 4 years. I do all of my service up to and including internal engine work. (i am amateur AMA moto GP)
