How important are SNOW tires for TT'S?
Hey guys,
I'm wondering about snow tires. How important are they on TT's? On my 7 I never used them, and never had a problem even though it was rear wheel drive.
What are your views on the TT? ..I dont plan on driving through snow all that much...but just in case ...I was wondering what everyones views are.
Also how much can I expect to pay for snow tires if I need to have them?

i don't think that is a quattro, also thats not in the snow.
if you not going to be driving in the snow that much i'm sure whatever tires you have now will do fine as long as they aren't bald.

I used to live in ND and I just kept good all season tires on it and when it came to driving in the snow and ice i just took it slow and everything seemed to work just fine. I dont think just snow tires are that important, but if you were gona use studded snow tires then that is some serious snow and ice driving.

For the most part you can do fine without snow tires. Although I do have a nice story that says that Quattro isn't necessarily better then RWD.
Basically my two previous cars were a Porsche 944 (RWD) and a Porsche 968 (RWD). I drove those around all the time, and although a great deal of times I was driving sideways down roads instead of straight, I still could get around in just about any type of weather. Both of these cars have a weight very similar to the TT Quattro. Now after getting my 225TT Quattro, I figured "Hey! I have AWD, no more snow problems!". Well I couldn't have been more wrong. Don't get me wrong, the TT Quattro does amazing in the snow, much better then a RWD Porsche. But the biggest flaw was I had snow tires on my Porsches, and not on the TT. Sure I could get out of the driveway, but when I hit the snowpacked roads I found the TT slip sliding all over, and the traction control coming on like mad. So I took it slow, and managed to get almost all the way to work with no problems, then as I was rounding a fairly small curve in the road, my traction decided to go on a coffee break, and I met good old mr. curb at about 25MPH. Thankfully it hit the front passenger tire and completely missed the body panneling. Although it mangled my front rim up pretty bad. I ended up having to buy new rims, and while I was at it I put Yokohama YK520's on it. They are supposed to be an all season tire, and they do wonders in the snow compared to my street tires. Both of my Porsches were impecable when I sold them, which goes to show you that snow or all season tires are not a bad idea.
So basically you should have snow tires if you plan on driving anywhere in the snow. Although if it only snows 2 or 3 times a year where you live, just stay home.
FYI I live in Colorado, so I'm pretty well versed in how to drive in the snow.

RE: How important are SNOW tires for TT'S?
Here in MN my poor TT see's lots of snow. *poor thing*
My Truck is used most of the winter but i do use the TT too because it's so much better on gas.
Anyways.
I found that all seasons till take you through pretty much anything most roads will throw at you.
But keep away from Z rated sport tires the single directional type those things are terrible in snow.
had those on my last TT and thought i was going to die a couple times going down the freeway in the winter.

Heres a fresh horror story.
Hit a slick spot last night and slid the car sidways into a guardrail. Bent two rims, broke the headlight housing, and taillight housing, and dented/scraped every piece of sheetmetal between the two.
I was going faster than I should for the conditions (half inch of snow fell a few minutes earlier), and braked late in a turn. I was driving aggressively because I was pissed off. Let that be a lesson to anyone not as hard headed as me. I only learn thru experience. It took totalling a 99 A4 to get me to stop driving tired. I had plenty of close calls waking up inches from a guardrail, but it didn't stop me until that guardrail was inches into the body of the car.
Two lessons actually, take it easy and try to relax when you're on the road, and don't expect the road to be in perfect condition, because **** happens.
Just got the number for the claims dept. now I'm gonna go take a shower and try to relax and warm up since I've been in stress induced shock for about 12hrs now. Physically Im alright, psychologically, I'm not doing so hot...
