My old 01 180hp FWD used to do this. If I remember correctly, it would either stop if I turned the HVAC completely off while it warmed up or it was something to do with the Air Pump being a PITA. Don't know how helpful this is but sadly it could be a few things.

Sorry about that. Everything seems to be an acronym these days. HVAC - Heating Ventilation/Air Conditioning. PITA - Pain In The @$$.

air pump is just to heat your catalyst up on start ups, but your cars ecu doesnt get read outs from the o2 sensors for a few minutes because the o2 sensors need to be heated up before working. so i doubt the air pump is the culprit.

Your car also has a self adjusting ignition firing, meaning if you pull one coil out the remaing 3 cylinders keep a 720 - 760 idle. however your engine will rock around do to the unbalanced chain of cumbustion.

vag-com would help tremendously, I would clean or replace your maf, replace coil packs and plugs. btw, tfsi "F" coils are cheaper and better. if you drive it hard though get the adapters. also got a set of STI coils laying around if your interested

I'd guess your MAF sensor is dirty. Try cleaning it.

Do you see any CEL light?
