only bad thing is if you ever wanted it and it went bad, if you always leave it off you wouldn't know it doesn't work. But no harm done having it off!

No...

When you get in the car, before you do anything and the light is off the ESP is ON

When you push the button the ! light comes on and your ESP is OFF.

What model year do you have again?
Did the older ones have a button?

It means you broke traction enough for it to come on, and that it's working.

I only turn it off when i want to push the car hard. If im not pushing the car off a light or blazing around corners, theres no reason to turn off a safety device. However i did have to turn the ASR (2000) off to go up hill in the snow since it was just pulling power and getting me nowhere.

Light on - ASR/ESP is off
Light off - ASR/ESP is on
Flashing light - power is being pulled since you dont have traction
Light stays on - it just cant keep up from my exp.
