dipstick hole broke... WTF
I was out there today replacing my timing belt, tensioner, roller, and water pump and when I got done and I figured I might as well fill up the winshield squirter and the check the oil since I haven't drove it in a while and when I go to put the dipstick back in I heard a crack. I bearly put that thing in there too. Is this common and is it easy to replace? I have never had to replace a dipstick holder before. Anyone have this problem? Easy part to find? How to replace?

Broke mine trying to access the thermostat. Easy to replace and buy, but mine came off in pieces. Try not to let anything go down the tube. Mine did and I had drain and filter the oil before I would drive the car. Mine also seemed like it had melted onto the metal pipe coming out of the engine.

I wouldn't drive the car at all like that (with it broken off). I capped mine and drove it... and the cap blew off and oil sprayed everywhere, ruining my alternator (my car doesnt even run right now because the alternator is fuct)
so yea... keep driving it to a minimum if you can help it. Shouldn't be hard to replace though. My new one is on the way.. but it appears to just either unscrew.. or slide off and the new one goes on the same way i would imagine.

Mine broke a month ago, they get brittle due to the block heat. My local VW dealer had the part (approx $7) in stock. Replacing was pretty easy, just tough to reach down (big hands). The base snaps into the block.Go easy when you align the upper tab into the slot, don't crack the new one.
