Cone filter for my TT

RE: Cone filter for my TT
Ok, checked the MAF.. I assume it's facing the right way because I can read the part #. But now that I think about it, it's possible that the PN is on both sides of the damn thing. lol
The cable coming out of it didn't look twisted around or anything, and was coming out of the MAF at the same angle as it was with the stock box.

I had changed my MAF with one from Modshack and when I replaced the stock one I noticed that the screened portion was facing right or closer to the airbox. I later found out that the screened portion actually does some technical stuff. like staighting out the air flow thru the MAF so the readings are acurate. I have since gone back to a 3 inch MAF with the screen. And the reader inside the MAF has an opening where the air is read and that should be facing so that incoming air hits it. Thats about all I know on the MAF stuff.

thats bs man i dont know who told you that but Audi has some of the best air boxes out there and not much will beat them so yea a loss can be felt in the botom end on the 1.8t motor when putting a cone on

The stock airbox is soo restrictive, not sure how you wouls lose power by goin to a more free flowing intake.

I have a neuspeed p flow intake ( which is just a K&N filter) similar in set up to what u had. BUT it does have a aluminum heat shield surrounding it. This could be the only thing wrong with the previous setup. You could defintely work something up with some scraps of metal, and even IMPROVE on it by getting some refective foil material and attaching it to the outside of the heat shield so it faces the engine bay not the filter obviously. Although a APC filter fitted in a Audi TT seems pretty whack, im sure you would be allowing all sorts of dirt through. Has anyone installed a itg cone filter, im seriously considering swapping the K&N for the itg. K&N may allow more airflow, but at the exspense of DIRT getting into your engine ITG defintely way to go, if its good enough for rally cars then its good enough for my TT.

I wasn't really saying that all open air filters make the car slower, just the setup I was using. Most open air filters for our cars come with some sort of heat shield, like a TTDA/VTDA or P-Flo.

I was responding to badluckaudi, but even with a heat shield that shouldn't make a difference on initial start up and drivin for hte first minute or so. But even after some drivin' I don't see how a heat shield, could make more than a few degrees difference. Which probably wouldn't cost you enough horsepower that you would actually feel a big difference in your car. If your saying that your car is fast again with the stock box back on there must have been some other problem, b/c a few degrees difference in intake temp wouldn't account for much horsepower at all. At a minimum I would think the less restrictive flow would cancel out the raised intake temps, so at a minimum you would fee no difference. Regardless I have the tt 225 and I can actually chirp the tires between 1st and 2nd shift now with AWD and that wasn't an option before, so It worked for me. That's just my 2 cents though.

actually, theres a rule of thumb, which I can't remember exactly off the top of my head, but its something like, for every 10° increase in temperature, you lose 1hp. Engine bays get hot..... You're probably right with the cancellation of restriction, and temps. It may flow better, but since its less dense, you're not improving anything.
