No. There's really not. VW has updated and upgraded the 1.8t coils so many times over the years its sick. Go oem.

Is there any reason to preemptively replace the ignition coils? I have heard that they may go out without warning. Reason I ask is that I don't want a weekend at the track to be ruined by something I could take care of now.

Thoughts?

Just get the bolt down hitachi coil packs from ecstuning and you shouldnt have a problem. they are a bit more reliable, but they are all oem parts.

Also look for the "R" series. They replace the older "H" model that had some issues.

I came across some "high performance" coils not too long ago, but they were $800.00+ for a set of 4. I cannot find them again, however. They were red, but dont' know the manufacturer. Don't think they were MSD, but I guess they could have been.

They werent MSD. They are basically stock packs with a new badge and sold for 8 times the price. They have been around for many years and they dont perform or last any better than stock, so im sure you can image how many people use them
