WOW and i was thinking about buying a 2nd hand tt. around a miledge of 40 but i do around 700 miles a week so won't take long to get ot 60!
say if everything was fine but i wanted to get the timing belt changed before anything happened? any ideas how much it would cost?

After reading your misfortune with the timing belt, I went and did some research on this matter. This is what I found out:
According to the owners manual, the belt is good for 105KMI. I called a friend that works at an Audi dealer and, according to research done by Audi engineers, the belt under normal driving conditions should last much longer than 105K MI. He also mentioned that in rare cases like yours, some belts brake earlier due to extreme driving conditions, like drag racing or HARD street driving.
The reason I'm interested on this issue is because I own a 2001 TT that just turned 66K MI. I also asked for advise to my mechanic and he recommended to wait until around 100K MI. He mentioned that most of the timing belts he had replaced at the dealer's recomendations, had been in good condition.
I guess is up to the drivers discretions and their driving habits to replace this belt early. It makes sence to spend around $500 now and save $5000 later.

LousPV, If you have an extended warranty that will cover the TB breakage, then listen to your "Audi friendly dealer". If your out of warranty and have lots of money to through away, then listen to your "Audi friendly dealer". If your out of warranty and want to be an informed consumer, read the many, many horror stories about TB breakage after 70K and schedule a preventative maintenance TB replacement if your mileage is over 60K.
Many a TT consumer keeps meticulous records and lets nobody but Audi touch the car, has no modifications and doesn't run the crap out of their "pride and joy" and they still have TB failure that results in a trashed engine after 70K. I know because my wifes TT is her daily driver that has cost me nearly $9,000 for a long block after timing belt failure. And yes, only Audi has touched this car since new, including the rebuild.
Can't someone get the government to look into this trend of premature timing belt failures? It would be in the best interest of Audi customers to at least get a recall letter from Audi to inform them of this potential. At a minimum, the customer could make his own decision to get it replaced before it breaks.

YOU DON'T NEED A NEW HEAD, JUST THAY HAVE TO REPLACE THE BENT VALVES 35-INTAKE VALVE EACH 48 EXHAUST.YOU WILL NEED A TIMING BELT,AND HEAD GASKET KIT.OFCOURCE THEY WILL TRY TO REAP YOU OFF.SHOW THEM THAT YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON ,SO THEY CAN'T F... AROUND WITH YOU

No, Audi has their *** covered, the belt is fine for over 105K. The belt isn't the thing that fails most of the time, its the tensioner. Not to mention, you probably have the water pump with the plastic impeller, which may be cracked, chipped, or missing entire pieces. That happens often.
Save yourself some time and money, and just do the belt at 60K.
