Default anyone here use a Sticky Pod, or similar camera holding device?

Gimme your thoughts on it, pro's and con's. I have a 4 cup version, and Im not real pleased with it, I was wondering who else used them, and what they thought.

Thanks

XLR8TT, I've got your answer from AW, the reason I ask is that I dont find the suction cup configuration of the sticky pod very versatile for such a rounded car as the TT. Hood, door, or hatch, those are you're only options. I'd like to be able to put a camera low behind the rear tire, but the only way that'll happen is with about 3' of extension

I'd be afraid to stick my camera out there, have you thought about one of the remote camera options? I've been looking at these and will probably pick one up next year. Much easier to mount and you don't take the chance of destroying your cam.

its tethered to the car if its used outside the cockpit, the worst that would happen is i scratch up the paint with the mount bouncing off the outside of the car before i could get to a stop.

But how is is protected from rocks, bugs, mud, water, and other things thrown at it from the road?

stay on the pavement, and out of the mud puddles.

: )

I wouldn't recommend a cross country road trip with the camera on the grille, but for a few miles of twistys, or with the camera on/near the rear of the vehicle, it hasn't been a problem. I have a Sony handycam, theres a screw in lens adapter on the front that I plan on using for some sort of screw on lexan rock/bug shield for an extra level of security, maybe cut wind noise too, just haven't got that far yet considering i don't use the camera mount much. That leads back to the original problem of no good places to mount it.

The other point of all this is a reasonably priced camera mount. The one you linked is nice, but I would rather not spend a few hundred bucks on something when I can put a little time in, and tens of dollars, and have something that works reasonably well. Water/rock damage is a concern, but I can find a way around it for less than $500 I bet. So far I'm $80 into it by buying a sticky pod, mainly to see what he used for suction cups. I found a distributer for similar cups, I make my own extensions, the only thing I haven't done that the 'pod has is the rivited base, and thats the part i don't like, so I'll come up with something different, hopefully better.

Well this is an interesting thread. {Bump}

I was wondering if anyone ever wanted to/tried/or did a mod involving an on-board cam/recorder?

I saw someone over in the A4 section did a computer in the trunk with a monitor on the dash. (not sure what the whole purpose was though)

I am a software developer and made my own security webcam program. I didn't like anything I saw out there so I did my own. I use it to monitor my home (and now garage)from work over the internet.

Anyways,,,,back to TTville. I was thinking this might be a way to do a camera security system on-board. Is this too crazy?
Any bullet cam or webcam (like Logitechs 4000) with a laptop in the trunk would work. And if you park near a WiFi, it could send images to a remote location. I have a few ideas for night vision cams tooif you're interested.

Maybe I'll be the first?

Just thinking out loud here. I got the idea after reading a threadtitled "unwanted attention" and wondering where I want to park my car now and all the implications of that.

The link for the trial software is on my profile lest I be accused of spamming. It has motion detection and can record DivX quality with the Codec added on. Just trying to contribute helpful stuff if it applies.
