ABS and Traction control light on.

ABS and Traction control light on.
Hi all!
Having a little problem and after a futile search through the threads a post is in order! I have a 2002 225HP TT with about 55k miles which is in good condition (sans that synchro grinding upshifting from 2nd to 3rd which comes and goes). Lately as, when I turn on the car *some times* the ABS light and the traction light (the triangle with the exclamation point inside) come on and stay on even if I shut down and restart the car. This doesn't happen every time though. It seems to happen mostly in cold mornings and if the car is warm and use it quickly after (thus turning it on again while it still is relatively warm) the lights don't come on.
Some research shows that the ABS sensor can be a little finicky and maybe needs to be cleaned? I'm just looking for a little more info before taking it to the shop and getting charged an arm and a leg for something minor.
Thanks!
