What level of light am I thinking of that will melt the housing? I always thought anything over 6k would be to hot.

The 8000k will be less luminous than the stock lights. 6000k is the brightest/cleanest. Also, heat shouldnt change, its the differnt kelvin level that determines the color

I orderd my D2S 8000K HID's from sharphid.com
They'repretty blue. blue enough for me, sometimes it shows purple as well. Color is perfect imho. Brightness isn't that bad for the other drivers. I had my dad drive my car behind me with the lights on at night, it has more glare than stock, but it's less bright than a s2000 or acura TL/TSX behind you, my gawd those cars have bright stock lights. I think they have one of the nicest stock HID's
Installation was easy. Took me about 20-25 minutes. Here a pic.

Sweet, I need to do mine. I just noticed the other day, that one of my bulbs are more yellow than the other. I'm beginning to seriously think my car was involved in an mild accident, and it was repaired by a cheap shop, and wasn't reported to show on a carfax report.

I put 10000k in mine, mostly blue with a slight hint of purple. Much brighter that the stock lights. Apparently whoever took out the stock lights before decided to touch the glass like crazy. That's a big no no with xenons as it fogs over the glass and makes it less bright. The only downside to this color is that they may be brighter but they don't light up the road as much. There's a reason that allstock bulbs are the color they are and that's because our eyes are most sensitive to that color (3000-6000k range).
