I am looking at an audi tt that is a 225 that they had swapped a 5 speed into, why on earth would someone do this, is it because of taller gears, if so what advantages and disadvantages does it have?

I would pull a Carfax on the car if you are serious about it. That does not bode well for it.

 

There was a guy on vwvortex that had this, im sure you are talking about his car. He bought the car like that and the reason we all came up with is that he most likely killed the tranny and could only find a 180 5sp awd tranny to swap into it. The only other reason to swap is if they raced the car and the taller 5sp gears are much better. If you really want to read what all took place search in the MKITT section on vwvortex.com

ewww. trans designed to handle 180 hp, now used on a 225 hp car.

 

that is they ONLY reason i considered a 180. I wanted to gearing from the 5speed.
I would say look into it as said. If he had to replace the tranny it is prob because he beat the **** out of the car and the tranny was the first to go. If i had the 6-speed i wouldnt go through the effort of swapping in a 5 unless that were the case and i couldnt locate a 6.

i called and confirmed it was a 225 from audi, i just called gave them the vin and said is it a 6sp or 5sp they said 6 which is what it was stock.
