Default 225 running hot

These past 2 days I've noticed my temperature gauge showing a little hot. Normally the needle is right in the middle, straight up and down, but since yesterday it's very close to the next tick to the right. I'm driving normal, not revving too high or aggressively, and it's only about 60 degrees out here so it's not the weather. I checked the fluids and oil and they seem to be normal. From what I can tell there doesn't seem to be anything blocking airflow through the engine, so I'm a little confused as to what the problem is, and I'm getting concerned that it hasn't gone away. Any ideas? Could this be a temp sensor thing?

This is normal behaviour. It usually happens to me when I am idle for a while...say at a light.

but it's happening while I'm driving, and hasn't done it this consistently before. I've seen it creep up while sitting in traffic, but then it goes back down once it gets moving again. But now it's hot all the time.

First signs of a slowcoolant leak maybe? Did you check to make sure that the fans are coming on in the front? Could be a bad thermostat. Look for those suggestions.

I think you either have a gauge going... or a sensor going. Here's why...
Here's a quote of me explaining ho the temp gauge operates. what you're describing is impossible with properly working sensor and gauge...
ORIGINAL: neur0tic
Mine does this too. The cold air from the A/C stops when you hit 110 deg C because the compressor shuts off. Mine will go well above boiling (115-125C). I do NOT make it practice to drive like that but have occasionally been stuck on the korean interstate in dead stop traffic and had no choice. Had it above the second notch for almost an hour and had no catastrophic failure at all. I do not recommend doing this on purpose... but at least it should give you a little peace of mind that nothing will likely blow up from running that hot for a short period.

I discovered that one of my fans runs, but the other one... the one that is supposed to cut on @ 105C does NOT come on. This is most likely what is wrong with mine.

Another little tidbit... the temp gauge on the cluster... does NOT rise gradually. I was using the A/C diagnostic thingy and monitoring my exact coolant temps on the A/C screen... and when the Temp reaches 100C, the needle goes to the first notch. It will not go past center until after 100C... and even if it only goes to 101C and stays... it will still go all the way to the first notch past center and stop. It will NOT go past the first notch until 110C. Once it hits 111C, it will immediatelymove (maybe not fast)to the second notch past center.

Basically, if it hits 100C and goes past center... it wont stop half way between notches if its 103 or 105C. it goes straight to the notch. Then once it hits 110C, it goes straight to the seond one. It doesn't always move quickly... but when you see it rise... dont be scared that your temp is rising that fast. Your temp may go one degree over the limit and thats it... but the needle will continue to rise until it hits its respective notch.

wow...

</rant>
You said the needle is sitting between center and the first notch... or "creeping". the problem with that... is that the gauge does not move with EVERY temp change. It only goes up at certain temp thresholds. ie 100C it goes to the first notch and does not move until it hits 110, then it goes to the second notch. (never seen it go above that. If it heats after hitting the second notch... the A/C compressor cuts off and the Eng idle gets erradic.

Ergot, if you're in limbo between notches... something is wrong. (Limbo = between notches but not going up or down. sometimes when it goes from first to second notch... or vice versa... it moves slow... but it should never stop in between.

Update: so now the needle seems to be just on the hot side of the first tick from center. How would I go about checking my thermostat or temp sensor? Could this be related to the issue between the black vs green sensors (if those are the right colors)? Where is the sensor located and which one do I want?

The needle's creeping higher and i'm getting nervous. Can anyone show/tell me where the coolant temp sensor is on a 225QC? The only pics i've seen are way zoomed in and useless to me. Something of the engine bay would be nice to know where to look and then something closer to show some detail would be nice. Thanks.
