2.0T vs 3.2
#3
I just test drove a 250hp 3.2-6 and the 265hp 2.0 TTs. I liked the ease of power in the 6 but the TTS was definitely faster after it spooled up. I guess I like the low end power but buying a 2.0 is less expensive than a 3.2 which makes it attractive. Are there any other differences between the models, like finishes and so on. Thanks, Ron

Great question. I think it comes down to responsiveness at low speed or acceleration at high speeds.
I have a 2010 TTS but haven't driven a 3.2 (yet). There's no question the TTS is crazy fast once the turbo spins up. But at low speed, there is major turbo lag, resulting in a very non-linear power curve. Sport mode keeps the engine at 3000 rpm or above so that the turbo stays engaged, which helps.
I've read that the TTS has a newer version of the Quattro Haldex that improves traction. The 3.2 is heavier and some assert it is harder on front tires. Turbo 2.0 has better gas mileage (obviously). I get 30 MPG in my TTS if I drive it gently (which is rare).
One other thing to consider-- if you are used to downshifting to use compression braking, that doesn't seem to work on the TTS. I don't know if this is a consequence of the smaller engine or the transmission computer control.
I'm probably the only TT owner on the planet who would prefer a manual transmission over the DSG. Yes, the DSG is amazing, flawless and faster on the track, but I miss the level of engagement I used to have with driving a manual.
I love my TTS, but I've been looking a 3.2 manual to test drive.

In my test drive side by side I found the 3.2 smoothier, seemed easier to drive. The engine was smoother as well. That is at normal driving. The low end torqe was nice. One you punched them, the TTS definitely had the edge, but it wasn't like the 3.2 was a slouch. I'm torn between the low end troqe and smoothness vs maybe a little rougher but better gas mileage.
