Default 180 vs 225

Thinking of getting a used TT; apoligize for the newbie question. Trying to decide whether it's best to buy a non-turbo 180 engine (lower stress, greater reliability) or a turbo engine (greater power, but more engine stress, maintenance expense, less engine life). Are the turbos problematic? How long do they generally last? Are the 180s slugs, or do they keep up? Thank you very much,
Peter

as far as my knowlage the only non-turbo engine that they put in a TT is the 3.2L the 180Hp and the 225Hp have 1.8L turbo engine but the turbocharger is different. I have a 180Hp quattro they are pretty quick for a 1.8T but the 225's thrill factor is alot higher.

Chucky is right, both cars have turbos, the one on the 180 is a K03 and on the 225 its a K04. As far as a comparrison its pretty straight foward they are almost identical cars which means identical weight, so you have one car at 180 HP then an identical car with 45 more HP. You will defintately be faster with the 225. And for the stress and all that rott, the engine was developed and has been tuned to have the turbo, so just running the stock turbo at stock boost you shouldnt have to worry about a thing. But who wants to do that?!![sm=gears.gif]

Hi Everyone,

I bought the 1.8t 180hp version of the tt... the 225 hp one from what I understand have a bigger turbo and intercooler... and when i bought the TT 10 months ago the 225 version is 8k more....

I thought that I rather buy the 180hp version which has the exact same engine and use the 8k i am going to spend anyways on the car and upgrade it. Im sure you will get more for your car that way.

as of this moment I spent $600 and modified my chip which brought my hp from 180 to 205 and the torque went from 175+ stocked to 235... so its a big improvement on just the chip upgrade... I also upgraded the stock diverter valve into a bigger forge one... I tried putting the forge blowoff valve just to see how it sounds like and its LOUD!!!!!!! other than this upgrade everything is all stocked...

I can keep up with my friends bmw 330i sport package till we both reach around 150kmh since he has up to 6th gear when I only have 5... :S

according the specs the stage 3 turbo kit will bring the car from 180 hp to over 250+ depending on the octane I got the infromation from this website

http://www.goapr.com/Audi/vehicles/tt180.html

so if i spend 8k on my 180hp tt with the upgrades i can easily out perform the 225

everyone correct me if im wrong..... [sm=gears.gif]

The 225HP Has a K04 turbo and TWIN intercoolers (one on each side). You can easily tell the difference by popping the hood. the 225 has a large air pipe between the bulkhead (aka firewall) and the plastic engine cover. the 180 does not. also the hollow structural support tube under the engine is used as duct work between the twin intercoolers on the 225 and is only used as a bracket on the 180. the 250 is a 3.2 VR6 engine. And is the only TT with the 6 speed DSG transmission. Just to let you know, the Tiptronic and DSG transmissions will automatically shift at redline when in manual mode and won't let you downshift into an RPM above redline.

Hey,
I have the same car as yours and I am cosidering putting a chip as well. Do you have any recommendations? Is it easy to install and what are the pros and cons?

Thank you in advance
