01 TT iPod connection

01 TT iPod connection
So the 01 TT I bought last week has a pretty custom iPod connector on it. By custom I mean 2 RCA lines going from the back of the factory head unit into a headphone jack that connects to your iPod. Two problems with this:
The RCA lines (I assume) went to the factory CD changer, bc you have put it in CD mode to hear the iPod. That's okay except...
Problem 2: even with the volume cranked on both the iPod and head unit, you can barely hear the music.
Anyone else have a similar setup that can give me some tips? I'm not sure if the person who had this before me was using some other way of boosting the volume output, or if I'm just not doing something right.
Thanks.
