Default Valve cover gasket - replacement

98 A6 quattro 144k.

I have an oil leak at the valve cover gasket on the driver side. I have read how it needs to be replaced.

How difficult is it to replace valve cover gasket? I have done several repairs but I have not taken this part of the car apart before. I don't want to damage anything, and my car buff friends tell me it is not too difficult. How much would a shop charge me to change this?

goto Audi DIY or similar site for details. It is as simple as removing bolts that secure the valve cover and replacing gaskets.

The torque for the cover bolts is only 7 ft lbs. Make sure you don't overtighten them. Same torque for the camshaft sensor(s) bolt.

It's a good opportunity to clean the vacuum regulating valve (Y-spider known as) AND the Breather hoses (they connect the valve covers to the manifold).

Mine were on much tighter than that... Hmm, wonder why they looked 'new' but leaked?

And ill most likely break, so have some 3/4" heater hose on hand to replace them..

I dont usually.. same with oil and tranny pans. I did take them off though, and they were tight. Little 'tink' sound busting them loose and all.

indeed, not those ... I just wanted to give him some heads up. My torque wrench doesn't go below 10 ft lbs, anyway. If you remember, I stripped a valley pan bolt on my first 7 ft lbs setup attempt ...

Jim, I used some sealant on my gaskets to keep them tight in the pan's mating edge. That way, when you install them they don't move out of position. You should know better than me.
I did that and so far so good; no leaks.

What brand of sealant did you use on your gasket? where is a good place to order the gaskets?

Do I need to change the Tensioner Gasket? On car-stuff.com It says that a Tensioner Gasket may be required? Is this something I need to change when I replace the valve gasket?
