Default VAG COM for A6

Greetings, all,

New to the forum. I drive a 99 A6 and my wife drives a 2002 A6. Will this VAGCOM work for both cars?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=330150635128

Thanks for the info!

There is no way that is going to work for $21 shipped. Oh it might plug in ok, and you might even see a few codes on your PC, but I doubt you will be able to do anything other than just look at codes and MAYBE reset them....but I wouldn't even go that far.

As far as compatibility - I would guess your 99 would be ok but I'm not sure about the 2002 as I don't remember when Audi converted to the CAN-BUS. A search on this forum would probably tell you. You might also wish to search for VAG COM and get some other opinions....maybe someone out there already bought this and can tell you if it works.

I guess you don't have much to lose, but it surely isn't going to allow you to do the functions of a Ross Tech VAG COM. Just be sure and give us an update if you do buy it so others know what to expect.

i'm just asked ebay seler, about that VAG-COM USB. Here is the answer:

"Our USB and Serial port Vag-Com Cable for version 409 will work on all VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda Vehicles unless the vehicle is on the CAN-BUS System. Check for a label under the hood to see if your vehicle is CAN-BUS. Many of the newer models use this CAN-BUS system. We do sell CAN-BUS enabled Vag-Com Cables:

*Currently not offered on eBay but can be purchased directly.

HEX-USB-CAN VAG-COM Cable with Interface for Ross-Tech Version 512 = $55 USD "

Looks like you could save ~$100 going this way.

I have one of those generic cables and I use 3.11 and have no problems doing anything with it. I did have problems with 409 though. I am not sure if they let you register 3.11 anymore though, so that could be a problem. Having a shareware version is almost useless, I registered right away.

I got the same response from the seller. I'll give it a try and report back to the group.

Version 3.11 of the vag-com software. All the software is for OBD-II cars. Now that I think about it more maybe 409.? did work. I don't remember, I don't care either, 3.11 works plenty fine for me. If you have Windows Vista, you will have to make some slight adjustments to the way the program loads so it works with vista. This is not a problem if you buy an OEM Ross Tech cable, but it is with generic cables that only run version 3.11 and 409.?. You will also need Vista compatible cable usb drivers if they are not already supplied with your cable. I have some generic ones if you need them.
