RE: Triptronic use on a A6 3.0!
What Jeffla posted above is basically the gist. You don't need to be stopped to switch to Tiptronic, just slide to the right from D and the gear selector reading in the dash will change from P R N D etc to 1 2 3 4 5 and you shift up or down to your liking.
Some people love driving like that constantly, I usually only use it on the highway/country roads when I need to pass someone, I can quickly just downshift and make the pass quickly.

While I find it fantastic that you (hopefully) bought the Audi because you loved it's lines and performance, I find it tougher to believe your not familiar with the Tip. I mean no offense, but me wonders if this might be a joke. If not, sincere apologies. As a Newbie, I am still learning much myself. After a few weeks on the Forum, you too can be an expert. I really mean that. Some of these folks on here know more about their cars then most Audi mechanics.
As for the tiptronic. It's loads of fun. It will somewhat regulate itself as in automatically shifting from 1st to 2nd so the rpms don't spin too high (can be remedied by chipping - another term you will learn here) and downshifting itself as you slow to a stop, ie: doing 85 on the highway and exiting to a ramp with a light at the end.
I find the tiptronic fantastic, particularly when you want to drop down from 5th to 3rd, hold it, and scream past some "fast lane fruitcake" that wants to police everyone else by driving 63 mph in the fast lane.
Also consider droping the shifter one below D to S and have increased torque power and longer automatic shift holds.
Welcome (unless you really were kidding and if so, welcome back)
