Default torque converter advice

All - I appreciate the advice and opinions I get on this site, soI welcome anything you all have to say.

I bought a 2001 A6 2.7t a few months ago, and had the P0741 code come on. I bought this from a small car dealer (non-audi), and they had the diagnosis done at an Audi dealer - of course, torque converter must be replaced. They paid for it with a refurbished converter.

This light keeps coming back, usually after about 200 miles if I reset it. The transmission seems to shift fine, only times is shifts bad are if I drive it before it warms up. I actually did not notice a problem with the shifting before it was replaced. Before I take it back, I'd like to get some input about what else could be causing this besides a faulty torque converter? I'm wondering if the torque converter even needed to be replaced!

Is it the same fault? Other possible causes for that fault are a blockage in the passage in the valvebody or tranmision or a plugged or faulty torque converter solenoid. Every time ive seen that fault the torque converter was at fault.

That works sometimes, there are several different ways that fault code can be thrown. If your TCC is only locking up out of spec the light will be thrown and it won't damage the trans.
If someone else is driving around with a stuck on or off TCC there might be increaseddamage to the clutch packs when driving. Considering new audi transmissions cost over $10,000 i wouldn't ignore the fault code.

Yeah driving on the highway with a torque converter that wont lock up will overheat the trans really fast, which in turn burns up the clutchs. You guys still sell new transmisions? Granted the rebuilds are only half that price, which is still expensive. I dont think ive ever been able to sell a new one.

I just bought the car in my sig with 105K and the same code as the OP for $5K under book. Right now I have the same symptoms as the OP, drives fine as far as I can tell. Also the car had no light when I bought but was told by dealer it would appear hence the low price, but shifts the same now as it did when no light.

My first impression is that infact the TC is NOT locking, based on my experience in my american trucks, I can tell when it's locked and unlocked based on the RPM response when throttle is applied.

My question is, is the Audi tranny/TC suppose to feel like my American truck, or is it suppose to be squishy, not clunky, soccer mommy, whatever you want to call it....Also, given, the money saved, I'm planning on investing in code reader/scan tool and I would like to know if there are any that can tell me what the TC or TC solenoid/clutchis actuallydoing? Please advise.
