Audi A6 The mid-sized Audi A6 model offers more room to the driver and passengers over the A4 line.

Default Top Speed is only 125 MPH. Does that sound right

I have a 2001 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro. She drives smooth. Smoother than a friends 2012 kia optima. My problem is top speed was only 125MPH. At 125she was still smooth. I would think she was faster. I am starting to think she has the chip that limits its performance (dont know what its called). What do you guys think. Is it really my cars top speed or can i do something to go faster.

You are just in that gray zone. Considering the age of the car it could have lost a few ponies over the years. I think originally the car was rated at ~220 kmh which is about 135mph.
However there is also a governor that could limit your speed somewhere around the 130mph zone (in your case maybe 125).
Honestly I do not know if your car was equipped with a governor (limits performance) or not but since you are so close to the max speed of your car I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I too believe the governor is set at 135mph. You can have the limit removed by a tuning place. Without the limit, I'm not quite sure what the 2.8 is capable of reaching.

In the owner's manual (at least for the '99 2.8 A6), I believe it says that the governor will let you get up to 130mph and then it decreases down to 125mph of which you can maintain. The top speed of the 2.8L (brand new and working perfectly) in the heavy A6 should be around 147mph (air friction limited) if you remove the governor and have a MASSIVE distance to get up to that speed.

What on earth are you doing at those speeds if you don't know what a governor is, though? Seriously, drive safe.

Sounds harsh, but I agree with him. Be Safe.

Ya I always cringe when I hear questions about governors, especially from those that don't know what one is. I had to see if my new car had one though, which it does at 135mph. Made sure to find this out on a very out of the way country road which is very well paved and straight as an arrow. I've got nothing against anyone trying to push the limits of their car, just don't put anyone else's life in danger.

My A6 was governed to 133. I (allegedly) tested that one night in 6th, then 5th, then 4th and found it to be true each time. A few months later I chipped it and (allegedly) discovered it would do 145-150 (needle was bouncing). I think that was the clutch slipping or the flywheel starting to disintegrate, both of which had to be replaced a few months later.
