starter turns but engine won't start,A6 '99
Hi to all,
I have problem with my A6 '99 avant quattro, 2.8L. In one very cold morning (-40 c)I couldn't start my car. It even does not give a sign that it wants to start, even starter turns good. Tried different things (easy ones in that cold) such as changed all sp. plugs, injected ether (quick start) into the duct after air filter, checked ONE spark plug for spurk (was ok), spark plug had a sign of gas (could be a sign that fuel pump is ok). I have no trouble code yet (looking for proper scan tool, see my thread about DLC connector). It was the same temperature for one week before and car was running good. Anybody, help, please. Share your experience.
Thanks.[/align]

The same thing happened to my 2001 A6and it was my ignition switch. Basically when I tried to start the car, all the dash lights were working, but the starter would not engage. No click, no noise what so ever.
Anyways, if it is the ignition switch, it is a $30 part from online or $95 from a stealer... It takes about 30 minutes to replace. I did a DIY on it and you can use search function to find it. Your steering column might be held with a nut instead of a triple square bolt, but the idea is the same. Hope it works.

Fuel, air mixture, electricity, timing.
If the starter turns the motor over, one of the preceeding is the reason for a no start.
If VAG Com dosen't give you a clue you need to find out which one is missing.

Sorry - it is only a 3 speed!

Hi to all,
hxgaser, maybe I could not describe properly: my starter turns, but engine won't fire. You shared with another good tip if it ever will happen to my car (ignition switch). Thanks.
To NH_USA: I think you're right, one of these things... . I'm trying to purchase VAG tool but I found that DLC contacts in my car are different (located in different spots) that described in ISO standards for OBD2. If you have VAG tool (not lap-top based, bud handy one) and if you have A6 after 1998 tell me, please, what model of VAG tool do you have? For more details see my post about Data Link Connector.
Thank you. I'll keep you up to date.
