RE: weird clicking/grating noise from steering wheel
probbaly a control arm or tie rod related... you feel/hear it near/behind the sterring wheel because the vibrations come thru the steering column I think. Try grabbing the wheel at 3 and 9 too and check for play

So did yuo get someone to look at it?
Mine is been torn apart and I should get it back mid week. So far they found tie rod ends and uppper control arms causing the sound you are describing, a small vibration and a new squeaky sound too.

RE: weird clicking/grating noise from steering wheel
It is booked into the shop on thursday, I will post on here as the what they think it could be. I did the wheel grabing trick but only had the jack that came with the car. I Bought a 2.5 ton today and I have to do something to the Passat on monday so I am going to jack up the A6 and try the tie rod test again with the wheel further off the floor. I hope it is not a huge bill I really can not afford it right now.

RE: weird clicking/grating noise from steering wheel
Ok they have lubricated the clock springbehind the steering wheel. That quitened it down for now I am going to see if it returns.
I also had them balence all4 tires then I went to a mall and the right rear wheel went up on acerb and then droped down. When I was driving home the back end seems lively, does anyone knowif that would know a wheelweight off?
The only other thing that seems to come back is my drift to the right when the wheel is pointing streight ahead.I had them align the car, does anyone know what else would cause a drift to the right? there is no play in the tie rods?
Thanks
James
