The skinny on downshifting + syncro trouble
#11
So what signs would I be looking for if it were the syncro rings? i mean the clutch seems to work perfectly really. never grinds are slips the gears. smooth on the let out. just idk from a dead stop when i try to put it into 1st and especially reverse it dont wanna freaking go without force, which doesn't exactly feel good for it...

Having read this thread, I have to say that Four Ring Circus and ppgoal are both right on the money. My father told me many years ago to brake and not to downshift 'cause brake pads (actually shoes at the time; pre-disc brakes) are cheaper than transmissions. However, that really just meant don't downshift instead of braking. Ask any motocyclist and they'll tell you that downshifting is part of the game (fun one at that). It can be used to help scrub off some speed, but more importantly to help match your engines speed to the road speed as any given situation might call for. As ppgoal says, you do have to be sure to syncronise your downshifts, generally known as "blipping the throttle". Remember that bikes don't have automatic transmissions, with the very rare exception, and mastering your shifting techniques, both up and down, is a must.
