Default which rotors and brake pads to buy?

My Audi is 99 A6 Quattro V6/2.8L. I took it to a small mechanic shop today. Mechanic told me I need replace the front two rotors and four brake pads. Since I know the mechanic a little bit, he said that I can buy those pads and rotors myself through internet and he will install them for me.

I did some research on internet and in this forum as well in regarding which rotors and pads are usually better, but seems like there is no certain answer. So this is what I am asking here : I am not a person who need "sporty" feeling, I just want the rotors and pads have good performance and do their job very well. Which is your recommendation? Where to order? Any particular issues I need take care of (like rotor size, etc..)?

Thanks!!

oem rotors and HAWKS HPS pads. If you can get SS brakes lines (130-150$) and frace blue brake fluid too you'll be in good shape for improved braking, less dust and less fade.

The main question is what size rotors you have. There are 2 possible sizes, 288mm and 312mm. I'm guessing you have 288s like my 2001 A6 Avant. Blauparts.com has a reasonable set, and it comes with DIY instructions, if you have a jack, jack stands, and the right tools.

Default Zimmerman Drilled rotors w/ Hawk HPS pads

Just got the Rotors (300 and change w/shipping) through Pure motor Sports. Pads came from tire rack right around 200.

I like Brembo blank rotors. I also like Hawk HPS pads, but they do generate some dust though. Check out buybrakes.com. I had good luck with them.

UNless yuo spend a lot of $ and go something liek BBK, in my exprience non OEM rotors don't make that kuc difference and much more expensive than OEM. I would get good pads to improve braking and dust on OEM rotors. Then the SS lines an dimproved fluid will improve braking a little but help with fade and pedal feel.
My HAWKS HPS (Front) dust very little not even 1/2 the amount of dust I had before. Also before my front wheels got covered with dust and got black in 1/3 of times it took the rear to dust as much. Not it is the opposite. Rear wheels with OEM pads dust at least twice as much/fast as the front Hawks pads... Just my experience...

Hey guys, quick question. I have an 01 A6 2.7T Quat - how do I know if I have the 288mm or 312mm rotors? I'm upgrading my brake pads for the first time since I bought the car and the ones I have now are squealing terribly on slow-medium stops. I'm looking at pads right now online but a lot of them specify for "<size>" rotor. Thanks!
