Default Replace Power Steering Pump

Lot of people have been talking about power steering now that it's cold again. I searched everywhere and can't find any threads which detail how to replace the power steering pump. I got a quote for $900 bucks which would give the dealer a nice christmas. Instead I want to do it myself as Advanced Auto in my area has a rebuilt pump for around $110, any tips out there???

I just replaced the power steering pump on my 02 A4 3.0L... I took off the front bumper cover, both headlights and pulled the front end out into "service position" since there is not really enough room to work with that big V6 taking up the whole engine compartment. I just got my service manual software up and running on my laptop before we started, so that helped. It's not a terrible job, but it's not easy and my car has been out of commission for a while waiting waiting on a pump (refurbished) and now the rubber intake hose (hose clamps, sealing rings for the banjo bolt). Still better than the $800 the dealer wanted to charge me, but I need to get it done by thursday and now that prolly won't happen.

I have the 2.7T and the power steering pump sits on top... Is there a way to get this pump off without taking any of the front end off?

The collision guide says replacing the pump takes 3.2 hours. OUCH!!!

Good luck!

The powers steering pump on my 02 A4 3.0L sits right on top too. I'm assuming that it looks about the same as yours. I know it's intimidating to pull the bumper and headlights off your car and put the front end in service position, but it will make your life a lot easier in the end. I don't think there is a better way to get the Power steering pulley/pump off. I didn't want to do it either, but I knew that once I did, not only would I know how to do it for any future maintenance, but that it would give me the necessary room to work. I bought a repair software manual online. (Elsawin) that helped alot, and I had a friend who is a better mechanic than me helping me and he had some tools I didn't have.

Last night I had to put new clamps on the intake hose to the power steering pump and I was able to BY MYSELF take the serpentine belt off, the power steering pulley off, get the hose clamps on the intake hose (very tight space) and then put the serpentine belt back on (Flat bar in one had prying against the power steering pulley to push the tensioner down HARD to get enough slack to pull the belt over the PS pulley with the other hand... not easy) and put the front bumper and headlights back on and front end back together.

Now, if anything else goes wrong, I have the confidence I can do it again. Let me know if you have any questions. I can tell you how to put the front end in service position and take the bumper off, it's not too bad, but I recommend buying a manual of some sort... and without the special Audi tools, i.e. the serpentine belt tensioner release pry bar!!!! (expensive, long wait time, even the dealers complain and sometimes don't use them) you sometimes have to get creative. Good Luck!

I just replaced my PS pump and the rubber intake hose that attaches to the pump and either replaced or doubled up all the hose clamps. My powers steering is quiet again and there are NO bubbles in my fluid! I did it this past week. I can walk you through it if you want. Saved my self about $550 and bought a couple of tools.

read my other posts. I recommend getting a manual for your car first. Haynes manuals are good and should only be about $25.

Get a rubber mallet and gently knock on the back of the pulley as you rotate it gradually. It is probably just stuck due to binding.
