Question about gas mileage

Question about gas mileage
I recently bought a 2000 A6 2.7T but I have a big problem with my gas mileage. I mostly use the car to go back and forth to work. It's 13 miles and more then 12 of those miles are covered on the x-press way at speed between 55-65 mph, yet my mileage is stuck around 19 mpg. I dont know really know what to do to make it any better, I put fuel injector cleaner not too long ago hoping it would make a difference but it hasnt done anything. From what I understand the mileage should be around 24ish specially if all I do is highway travel. Any help / ideas would be much appreciated.

RE: Question about gas mileage
I had a 2001 2.7T with which I commuted daily 60% highway and 40% local roads (tiptronic) and I never got more than 18MPG. However, when I went on long drives, using the cruise control, I would get in the low to mid-20's for mileage. I think the best I got (7 hour trip to Maine) 26MPG. It CAN be done, but if you are in traffic, even a bit of stop-and-go, your mileage will suffer.
Just make sure you are doing everything you can to maximize your car's effieciency. Check your tire pressure at least every two weeks (I check every fill-up). You'd be suprised how much your tire pressure drops when the temperatures change. Also, check your tires for uneven wear, which might indicate an alignment issue. Lastly, drive conservatively, and don't stomp on the gas so much (although it IS hard to resist that with the twin turbos!).

RE: Question about gas mileage
Thank you for your reply "Boston Driver" but the problem is I did all that, I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin and after buying the car and reazlizing that the 13 miles each way to work wasnt doing anything to the mpg, I took it all the way to Chicago (apro. 75 mile) all on the highway and used cruise control but my highest my mileage went to was 19.3 mpg. Someone told me to get the aprk plugs looked at, since I dont know jack about cars so I dont know if that is good advice or not.

RE: Question about gas mileage
You guys all suck!!! I get 12 miles per gallon but I live in San Francisco. I drive 14 miles a day back and forth and it is about 3 gallons total but I do have it chipped so I guess thats what I get for living in the most beautiful city in the US and drive a 400 hp car. I feel ya but what are your gas prices there mine are $2.68 a gallon.

RE: Question about gas mileage
I have a 2000 2.7T. I drive mostly rural. A round trip of around 30 miles the other day I managed to show 26mpg on the computer. I have just changed the DV's and vacuum hoses with clips and I'm pretty sure its made a noticable difference in my mpg. Maybe 3 or 4 mpg. I was driving very lightly trying to stay off the turbo's below 2000 rpm. I was pleased with the results but slow driving gets boring.
My petrol here costs around £4.10 per gallon (4.56ltrs) Thats $7.75 to you lucky people over there.
I believe we have 85 % tax on our fuel here in the U.K.

RE: Question about gas mileage
Your around town mpg sounds about right. Although the computer on my 2003 A6 2.7T MT6 is about 2 mpg optimistic, I keep a log for the car and record actual mileage divided by gallons. A lot of local driving drops the mpg to high-teens. But I also drive a lot of highway (about 25K a year) and at 65-70 it gets 22-23 mpg and (at my more normal speed of) 75-85 it gets 20-22. I travel across Michigan which is basically flat, and check the tire pressure regularly.
I have noted that mileage improves when the ambient temperature is in the 80s vs the 20-30s.
I also have a GIAC chip. But I normally shift well below 3000 rpm and rarely bring it over 4000. But when I do, I really appreciate that GIAC!
