Default Power Roof Question

The power roof on my 96 A6 retracts when power is restored to the car - such as when the battery is changed or the battery is run down because the lights were left on. The control **** was not moved from the closed position.Normally I take out the little handle and manually move the roof to the closed position and everything works OK until the next time.

The problem is that the hex socket for the little handle is getting worn out and the handle dosen't do the job anymore.

Two questions;
1. How do I get the roof closed if the handle dosen't work?
2. Is there something I can do so the roof does not open every time the power is restored?

If you're talking about the allan bolt used to manually turn over the sunroof motor then there isn't much you can do short of changing the motor itself.

Yep that's the one!

I'm thinking I can disconect the wires from the motor and find the correctterminalto power the roof closed - then pull the fuse.

Yeah you can reverse the power flow to the motor to close it if you wanted to. Thats how it works anyway.

I'm going to try that approach. At least it will be closed. ( A real good thing since snow and other nasty things enter the vehicle during winters in New England.)

Tech Bulletin 60-91-07 gives me some hints about how to do it. Just need to stay away from the controller.

Is openingwhen re-powering typical?

No, its not. I would say there is a problem with the potentiometer (switch)

This car has done it since the beginning. When it repowers it goes to the retracted position but it thinks it is closed. Moving the pot to retract will do nothing but moving it to one of the tilt positionsit will move it forward a few inches, so I think the pot is telling itto move in the right direction it just thinks it is closed when it is really open.

BTW -- I appreciate your input and help for the AUDI people.

hey, you beat me to that question, my 96 A6 does the same, if the battery runs low and i start the car the roof opens all the way by itself, when it does this i know that i only have about another one or 2 starts before its dead, i see it as a handy warning feature, hasnt failed me yet, but when it opened i just turn the switch open and closed again then it closes again., i also sometimes get that when it is open to the other posision like a vent , then it sometimes closes and opens when i go over a speed bump, dunno why, i think maby its the pot thats a bit worn out and sensitive to vibrations., if yours dosent close at all by itself after starting then try removing the fuse and replacing it again.

Your probably right about my spending too much time with my neighbor ftom KY

As for AUDI people -- They are crazy people that own and appreciate AUDIs. You could expand the words crazy people with other more colorful adjectives if you want.

I was just thanking auditech79 for his assistance. I realize that there are three or four people that give good technical info on this site and I didn't mean to leave them out. Many times we get great information from another AUDI Guy or Gal and don't thank them. I quess I'm getting sappy in my old age but I appreciate the assistance they give to us.
