Poll: How many members have had Torque Converter Failure?
#11
Mods make no difference on the TC failure rate.
The TCC (torque converter clutch) is what fails and it really doesn't matter if you have 200 or 700 horsepower, it will fail just the same.
I have replaced them on 96-04 A6's at various mileages and years, they won't give you a warning, just a check engine light usually.

I had a failure shortly after I bought my car, luckily the dealer paid for most of the repair but it was complete bs.
Dealer sent me to Audi shop to have diag done, sent me to indy shop for repair. Replaced with rebuilt tc, light came back on. Assumed rebuilt tc was bad, had another one put in. TC was not bad, Audi claims it was missing a seal only they can supply. Replaced again with new OEM tc - fixed problem, increased gas mileage by about 3 per, but still have other problems that I have to keep fixing.

Your TC will fail at one point or another jaymac This will still be a risk even when you put a aftermarket upgraded TC.. It is like a clutch in a manual and most likely will need changed. We are lucky that it commonly only fails once unlike a clutch

Yeah, but at least a clutch has a somewhat predictable pattern of failure/replacement relative to miles and driving habits. Also, it sounds like the TC is much more expensive than a clutch, but I don't actually know.
I just hope it is gradual failure, and not a "stop you dead in your tracks and can't drive the car until you fork over 3K" type of failure...
Oh well, c'est la vie, I'm goin' stage 2 anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm now having different problems, but not with the TC. The car runs much better, but I still sense there might be something else going bad with the tranny, the previous owner must have driven this car very hard. The OEM converter was ~$900, and book rate on the labor is ~15hours....I got the labor about 1/3 the cost of an audi dealer.

Are you kidding me? Your trying to say that the horsepower doesn't matter? It adds more stress onto a stock torque convter ment for 250hp. That means you can use a stage 1 clutch for a stage3 manual aswell... Yes they will all go at some point in various mileages and years but this dramaticly speeds up the process of the TC failure. Look at the Rs4's / Rs6's that have mods even. The only system that won't cause failures in the TC would be the new porsche which has 2 TC other than 1 one.

You will notice slip with 500HP... Sorry to break your heart they weren't ment to hold 500HP......... Please show me that number in facts hah. It was ment to hold 250HP solid over a long period of time..... If it could hold 500HP it would be holding it for longerlongevity. I don't know what TCC you got in your car but your just stupid. You will break your TC within a week with 500HP+ gl hf don't listn to this guy
