ross tech definition of P0420:16804/P0420/001056 - Catalyst System; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold


Not worried about the 1st two. abs module was disconnected while diagnostic was being done.

purge valve is on its way.

p0420 is what concerns me. the car has 95k.
is there a sure way i can tell its the cats from 02?
i have no rattling (ive read bad cats give off a rattle)
i do not have any unusual smell like sulfur ect..

if it is the 02 sensor which side is bank one? and from bank one would i have to repalce both before and after cat?

ive looked under the car and the one after the car seems DO-able. but the one b4 the cat seems tricky. (i couldn't even locate it) lol

does anyone know how i would go about getting the one b4 the cats? diy and what not.

but mainly i need to know whether its the cat or 02. i have a emission test coming up in FEB so i want to get it fixed asap.

from what ive read the 2.8's dont really have a big problem with cats failing unlike the 3.0 so is it safe to assume its the 02 sensor? thanks have a Merry christmas & a happy New year to all!



**note*** check engine light is not on. i was just checking codes out of random and got these. MIL IS NOT ON if that helps

 

If it was a sensor it would tell you for example bank 1 sensor 1. Bank 1 should be on the side of the first cylinder if i remember right.

 

so i would have to replace the cat correct? also i took it to a muffler shop and he told me he could do 2 things he could get the oem cat and the pipe and replace the whole thing or just replace the cat which would be much cheaper. would the 2nd idea work? or is there some kind of standards for cats to meet before the code goes away?

so far i have no check engine light. all i have noticed is my oil level has become really low. added about 3/5th of a full bottle altogether. i have changed the oil 2k ago with correct leveling.
