I am a firm believer in season dedicated tires. However, before I became a convert I was happy with Pirelli Pzer Nero M&S.

I'm currently running Nitto Invo's and LOVE them.

Past tires-

GY GSD3's- outstanding tire, but very expensive. If price isn't an option get these.

BFG - KDWS, extremely good tire. A little loud but very "grippy"

Default Bridgstone Potenza is the way to go

I got a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE960 AS Pole Position from Discount Tires last week for my '99 A6 and they've been pretty good so far. A lot quiter than what I had before and the ride is very nice. I'm looking forward to testing these in the snow soon!

Tirerack gave these tires very good ratings also, but they arn't an option for the Audi A6.
