Default Need Expert to Interpret Scan for Me

1999 A6 2.8 FWD

The INSP light had been on for a while - I ignored it for a thousand miles or so. I was doing some work on it and had the battery cable off for a couple days ( I was replacing the stalk switches on the column). When I reconnected the battery, it started up rough and only would idle at 250 rpm or so. I hear in a previous post it could be throttle body related, and I tried the hold down the gas/key on thing. It did not help. Anyway, I was able to get someone (who is gone now) to pull a scan for me, but I do not know how to interpret it. Any experts out there that might be able to help.

Thanks... ...Mike

Go to www.ross-tech.com and www.BentleyPublishers.com
My Bentley does not cover the 1999 model year.

To be honest with you 90% of these codes are caused by having the battery disconnected. I would imagine that if you erased all the codes the only ones that would return is the throttle body code and brake switch code. The brake switch code is important for cruise control, braking, ABS reasons etc. but it won't cause the engine to idle weird. That will lie with the throttle body. To do a throttle body alignment without a vag com scanner just turn the key to the ON position and leave the car alone for 12-15 minutes, the throttle body should set itself. I would recommend cleaning the throttle body valve with brake cleaner before doing the aligment though.

Not knowing much about the scans, the

17967 - Throttle Body (J338): Fault in basic settings-P1559 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17953 - Throttle Valve Controller: Malfunction-P1545 - 35-00 - -

would seem to indicate that its TB related,

I have tried a few of the key/timing ( 2 minutes, 15 minutes, etc) tricks now, and none of them even make any noise at the TB. Are the gimmicky resets 'official' ? If they do not work, should I even hope that a VAG-COM based TBA would be better ? ( If so, I'll look out on vag tool finder dot com and see if I can rustle up a unit near Cary. NC.

Thanks...

Correct, the voltage too low fault is from the battery, the throttle body will usually throw those codes when the battery is removed. If the key cycle trick isn't working for you, it needs to be done with a vag com. You could also have the dealer re-set it for you but that could be pricey.

Did you disconnect the battery first, reconnect and do the throttle body alignment using the procedure? You should.

I will have access to a vag-com tomorrow.
I am unfamiliar with its use, but found a procedure at

www dot ross-tech dot com
/vag-com/cars/throttlebody.html

One of the pre-reqs says there should be
* No DTC's in the Engine Controller

I am very new at this (but want to learn)
Do the codes listed here mean I can't do this?

Address 01: Engine Labels: 078-907-551-AHA.lbl
Part No: 4D0 907 551 AH
Component: 2.8L V6/5V MOTR AT D04

Shop #: WSC 40536

P1559 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17953 - Throttle Valve Controller: Malfunction
P1545 - 35-00 - -
Readiness: 0110 1101

Also - I'm supposing I have motorized throttle control and not drive by wire - is that right ? Its a 99 A6 (C5) AHA 2.8 30v

Thanks again - I will let you all know how it works out.

...Mike
