Mobil 1 ATF?

Mobil 1 ATF?
Do you guys know where I can pick up Mobil 1 ATF in California, especially in SF Bay Area? I can't find the darn things anywhere. They used to be everywhere, but what happened?

Based on my experience - I changed the ATF 3 times since I have the car (78 k km, last change with the TB replacement at 110k km) first time with filter, next 2 times drain only -4l.
->Castrol import cars ATF-Pentosin ATF1- VAG ATF: I'd say I found the later to have the best feel and work.
I tend to be skeptical about multipurpose, wide range solutions- they work, but not as especially formulated ATF's, what the long term effects will be - one could only guess..
I strongly suggest - go with VAG ATF, buy it from Volkswagen dealers - is it considerably cheaper (at least in my area).
Just my 2c.

I am pretty sure others that use it in their car can chime in as far as Mobil 1 ATF...
From a personal perspective, I bought the car with a "thud" between 1st and 2nd, and 2nd and 3rd gears (sheister seller...) and after changing the fluid TWICE (within 3-400 miles - @ 153,000 miles was the second change, when I changed the TB and all the other stuff in the engine) the thuds and harsh shifting virtually disappeared.
It could just be that by virtue of "coincidence", the viscosity of the new, clean fluid alleviated the problem, but MOBIL 1 ATF worked for my old C4... 12,000 miles later the transmission shifts as it should, not as it did when purchasing the car...
Nowadays it appears that pretty much all the tranny fluids are "especially formulated" to whitstand rough driving... at least for a certain mileage range. Sound and common sense, coroborated with manufacturer recommendations would command changing the fluid every 35-40,000 miles for peace of mind and pro-active maintenance.
If I would have had a 3-4 yr old Audi, probably I would recommend as well the VAG ATF...but that would just be like chaining the owners' legs to the "frugal" dealers' front marbled entrance...
For half the price, I would go again and again with the MOBIL1 ATF, for half the price...
P.S. Sorry, Gaser... Here in IL I can find it at AutoZone... Can't you order it online from their site?

With the due respect right back at you, my transmission is ZF, but I don't have a Quattro....By the way, I had no idea Gaser was talking about Quattro... I failed to see where he mentioned he needs Mobil 1 for his "Quattro".
Since Mobil1 ATF is on the APPROVED ZF Compatible fluids list, I don't see why not wanting to donate to an Audi dealer's electric bill would be considered "frugal thinking".

ZF applications:
Make Model Engine Model Year OE Part # Code ZF Part # Type
Audi 100 2.8L 1992 - 1994 01K 300 041 CDT 1050 012 002 4HP18FLE
Audi 100 Quattro 1992 - 1994 01F 300 041L CEZ 1050 020 023 4HP18FLA
Audi 100 Quattro 1993 - 1994 01F 300 041S CNT 1050 020 030 4HP18FLA
Audi A6 / Avant 1995 01K 300 041F CRC 1050 012 010 4HP18FLE
Audi A6 / Avant 2.8L 1995 01K 300 041M CYR 1050 012 018 4HP18FLE
Audi A6 / Avant 2.8L 1995 - 1998 01K 300 041L CJE 1050 012 014 4HP18FLE
If you have 4HP18FLE, then your car is not '95?
Anyway: the main difference here is that 4HP transmissions take Dextron III, and ALL 5HP transmissions take (the original) Esso LT 71141-Lifeguard5-Pentosin ATF1 and VAG.
As Mobil 1 is compatible with ALL types of ATF one could wonder how well the particular requirements are met?
BTW- I have not done any repairs at a dealers yet (besides new set of keys) and do not plan to,

By the way, meeting requirement and not meeting requirement are all relative here... I own a 10 year old car. a few degrees short or slightly lower viscosity of the standard wouldn't hurt nor matter in most cases.

An excellent study one could say!
The specs do no reflect the additives and their interaction with the internals.
Some RedLine fluids are ester (group V) based and require complete flush - esters do not mix with other groups - milkish emulsion would result.

I don't really know the whole formulation of any of the transmission fluids in consideration. All I know is that they all seem to work in 5HP19FLA applications. And since I no longer have warranty on the car, and am looking for oil that I can pick up locally that is somewhat reasonable in price, I decided to not use the expensive stuff.
The last fluid change was Pentosin which was about 30,000 miles ago. I will let you know how it goes with Redline. If you see a thread on rebuilt or new tranny, (O_o) then you will know how it went.
