just bought 1997 a6: new tranny and tires, what next?
hey everyone! just bought an 1997 a6 with just over 170,000 mi. The transmission and tires have both been replaced within the last 5,000 mi. What would be a wise choice to replace/update next to keep the car in tip top shape. Mind you, I don't know the slightest thing about cars or car parts.
also i was looking at replacing the car stereo with a newer model one that would have mp3 compatibility and still retain the use of the cd changer. Is this possible and how much would it cost me?

When changing the timing belt (may need also the tensioner and the idler pulley - both around $ 40/piece), you might as well change the thermostat (about $ 16), the water pump ($60-65), and the serpentine belt ($20).
This also triggers a coolant flush (2 bottles X 1.5 liters of the Pink/Purple Pentosin - at $10.95/piece ; 2 bottles mixed at 50-50 will make 6 liters needed for the coolant flush).
Of course, you don't have to do all of this. However, if you bought the car without any maintenance records it may be wise (judging by the high mileage it has on) to "start afresh" with these parts that ensure a smooth engine operation.
I also just got a 1995 A6 with 152,000 miles and I'm changing all of the above, plus an AT flush (Filter -$10; Pan Gasket-$ 4.50; Pentosin ATF - 3 liters x $13.95).
Lastly: have you checked your CV Halfshafts?

Would you advice against replacing at some point in time the expensive Pentosin for let's say Mopar's AT+4 that's around $5/quart?
I heard that most transmissions in Chryslers are extremely "cranky", and only this Mopar AT+4 provides for the right quiet, yet efficient lubrication.

In my opinion they, the waterpump, thermostat, and front seals are a MUST DO when changing the timing belt. Blauparts sells the complete kit with antifreeze for a bit over $200. Doing any less is foolish!

Agree with that for sure. The previous person with my vehicle had the TB done at the dealer, but still didn't have the t-stat and water pump done. 30 k miles later, I had to get it fixed as there was a leak.

ppgoal -- yes it's a Quattro (the only way to go) with just over 200K miles and it's still a baby. The 97 Avant has only needed a few vacuum lines, and the normal maintenance stuff. I did replace the rubber brake lines because I didn't like the way they looked and the radiator after my daughter re-arranged the front end a little.
I had 350K on a 89 200QT. It needed a clutch at around 225 and the usual maintenance items like brakes, CV boots (always did rebuilt half shafts), Misc ball joints, and a rear link.
