How to reset a6 4.2 transmission
I've been dealing with water leak problems in my 2000 a6 4.2. Under heavy rain, water leaks into the front and back passenger footwells. Each time this happens, the transmission goes into limp mode. I would rather not take my car to the garage again (I have a file 3 inches thick on this subject and have already spent serious dollars on this car). Does anyone know how to reset the transmission?
P.S. I read a previous posting that said: turn on the key (not the engine), hold the pedal all the way to the floor for five seconds. This would reset the transmission. Is this correct?

i had a problem in wich my transmission was stuck in limp mode. try disconnecting the battery for about 10-15 mins then re-connecting it. make sure you unplug the black negative cable first and then the red positive one, that should take care of it.

You'll know it when it happens. The dash display for the transmission reverses color and the car will only allow operation in 5th gear or reverse. Makes it tough to get across town... If enough water accumulates in the front passenger footwell, it will get into the computer located under the carpet and cause the fault. A frequent source of the water leak is through the cabin filter located in the engine bay under the plastic cover by the windshield. How it gets into the air intake is still a mystery to me...

How common is this particular leak and is it in just the 4.2? I think one partial fix is to get the carpeting up and slide a wide piece of plastic over the computer area. Not too hi-tech but water will never know that.
