Default Higher engine idle on start up

When I start the car up, (2.8l A6Q) the engine seems to make a lot more noise then usual, but after a minute or so it quiets down some. It normally starts up and stays around 1100 rpm but then drops to around 800. Popped the hood and it seems to be coming from the around the airbox.

Is this normal at all?

The idle is normal

What does the noise sound like, If it's pinging it's the lifters.

If you think it's the lifters try seafoaming it.

What oil are you using?

Anyone know where the secondary air injection pump is located on this car? (A6 w/2.8) They make a vacuum cleaner type whining noise (as they get old) and only run for a short time during a cold start. I THINK they are mounted under one end of one of the bumper on this model.

This could be exatcly what is wrong...

Anymore info on it? I know Jettas with the 1.8t have this system and some people have just removed it all together.

Secondary Air Injection is on MOST Audi's but NOT on the 2.7t with a manual transmission. (I have no idea why not....) There may be other Audi's without it.

I wouldn't change anything until you start having a CEL.

If you live in an area without emissions, you could disable or even remove it. (Some places this is not legal.) It isn't required once the cats warm up. I am not sure how much damage (IF ANY) is done to the cats during this warm up time without the extra air.... I wouldn't expect much. It is up to you. (And the government where you live!)

The guy has a 2.8 and the air pump is in front of the wheel well, under the air cleaner, on the passenger side.
And yes it makes some noise when the vehicle first starts.
It sounds really cool when it echos in a parking garage.

It actually sounds really bad....like something is falling apart!

Thank you though! I'll check it tomorrow.

When you find it, you should be able to tell when it is running by touching it. (May not be easy with it under the fender.) If it stops running at the same time the noise stops.....

Do not disable the pump without disabling the Kombi valves. If the valves open without air flow, hot exhaust will back-flow into the plastic hose....
