Thumbs down Help on selecting a Error code electronic reader

Hello
I have basic knowledge on the concept of error code readers for cars - I have used the one that O'Rileys ( one of the local auto shops ) and for free they let you use a reader but from talking to other individuals i have found out that there are different quality of readers - I know there are readers that also let you adjust settings and are really advanced and im not looking for that

I would just like a reader that is going to give me accurate readings and actually be able to read all the error messages

I have a 2002 audi a6 3.0 awd if that matters at all

Thanks for the advice

go to ebay and search for a vag-com usb cable from china

ross-tech.com for freebie software

they make an expensive cable that will allow you to access all the "features" of the software but the cheap cables listed on ebay work with the freeware version.

fair warning- some folks have been unable to get the cheap cables to work with the software or to work adequately.

If you plan on keeping your car for any length of time and want to DIY one of these cables is pretty much a maintenance necessity.

full disclosure-I have one of the licensed/full featured cables and am quite happy with the benefits of ownership. IMHO well worth the extra expense

I have a cheapy USB cable and it's worth it weight in gold. A "must have" tool when owning an Audi. The OBD-II readers are worthless.

Why is someone that has 63 posts just now asking about code readers for an Audi?

You would think they had heard about VAGCom by now...

maybe this is the first time im really looking into this (after 63 other post) would be bcus all those other post were related to headlights, window problems, mirror issues, water pump, and other stuff that doesn't need anything to do with an electronic reader and i also work 40 hrs a week and go to school full time - dont judge dude
